(Someone on the Haskell mailing list was asking about parsing IP headers,
and I knew I'd seen something nifty in another language, but couldn't
remember what.  Eventually someone posted this.)

It's a small embedded language inside Erlang that lets you describe binary
data formats so that you can address them (read/write) safely.  Used as
you might use a struct in C (but with more compiler and runtime checking).

If you're not used to function al programming languages it's perhaps not
obvious how reading this "works" inside the language.  Once you've defined
the structure, how do you get to the contents?  It's all done via pattern
