Both good speakers, but with completely different personalities.

The Quad 12l is beautiful at low volumes - smooth, slightly rich, very
elegant. Very easy on the ear - just a pleasure to listen to. But when you
turn it up, it sounds bloated and somehow out of control.

At low volumes the ATC SCM7 sounds very restrained - too reserved, slightly
uncomfortable. But when you turn the volume up everything comes together and
it's a muscular, coherent, tight, machine.

The Quads are rear-ported reflex, so need plenty of space (some of the booming
I describe above could be due to too little). The ATCs are completely closed,
and quite small.

For the kinds of listening I do, the Quad wins out. I just don't have the
volume very high. But we have the ATCs too because they are small enough to
be allowed into the bedroom...
