detailed look at optimizing xquery in an RDBMS.  It seems to be generic

We're using RDBMS for the NSA (NOAO Science Archive - an archive of data
collected by NOAO telescopes).  One problem we're facing is how to
efficiently specify and retrieve images based on provenance relationships
(what data is derived from this observation?  what data were used to
reduce this image?).  XQuery provides a possible framework for such
queries, but raises performance questions (that MonetDB/XQuery addresses).
