I am not sure how well this works, but it avoids any public or protected
(single underscore) "contamination":

class Proxy(object):

    def __init__(self, mutable_delegate):
        self.__mutable_delegate = mutable_delegate

    def __getattr__(self, name):
        return getattr(self.__mutable_delegate[0], name)


def make_proxy():
    mutable_delegate = [None]
    def setter(x):
        mutable_delegate[0] = x
    return (setter, Proxy(mutable_delegate))


The idea is that you use make_proxy to generate a setter and a proxy. 
Then you use the proxy as you would any other object.  Later you can use
the setter to "tie the knot".

Obviously, nothing on the proxy must be called before the setter.
