[Nothing really new here, just notes for myself, because I forget all the
options...]

 - gcc has gprof.  You need to recompile with -pg and it doesn't work
   with dynamic libs in 32bits (but is supposed to in 64).  Couldn't
   get it to work today (generates file for tracing data, but saves no
   measurements - don't know why).

 - Linux has oprofile.  This has worked well in the past, and supports
   Java and system calls.  It needs to be able to read "vmlinux" which
   doesn't seem to be available on CentOS (unless you compile the kernel
   yourself).  Couldn't get it to work today (started OK, but no
   profiling data after running target).

 - valgrind --tool=callgrind works for C code, 32 bits, no need for 
   vmlinux.  Could well be the slowest.  Saved my skin today.
