I guess this is old news, but it looks like the Java memory model has been
fixed in 1.5.  This article explains things -

Both recommend using the "Initialization On Demand Holder idiom"
incidentally, which is a new one to me.

Depressingly, this came up in the context of a dicussion with a co-worker
whose response to "why is you code messy [description of messiness
elided]?" was "it's in the pattern".  So patterns are no longer something
that help us see think more clearly, but rather excuses to not think...
