This seems to be some new (to me - different to ad-hoc or parametric) kind
of polymorphism (haven't read it yet!).

We have demonstrated here how polymorphic variants allow one to combine
the benefits of algebraic datatypes [...] with code re-use at a level of
simplicity comparable with OO languages.  The added expressive power is
significant: encoding in either traditional variants or OO style would
incur problems ranging from [...]

(I'm thinking of starting a new project using OCaml, so expect more OCaml
related posts.  The book - http://caml.inria.fr/oreilly-book/ - is great. 
I really don't want to stop using Haskell, but for this project I need
speed, particularly fast array access, which just isn't there yet.)
