(Background - writing a compiler for a language can be split into various
steps.  You parse the source code into a tree, "rewrite" the tree, adding
information, and generate code.)

interesting comment by michaelw (search in the Lambda page for "Parse Tree
Munching with XSLT") discussing how XSL was successfully used to rewrite
an AST.  Neat idea.
