Week 12

From: andrew cooke <andrew@...>

Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2015 08:57:20 -0300

* Read M John Harrisson's "Light"
  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0553382950
  Excellent, literary SF.

* Wrote a DOT parser for ParserCombinator
  https://github.com/andrewcooke/ParserCombinator.jl/blob/master/src/dot/DOT.jl

* Cleaned up my office post-bike-painting, bought a new vaccum cleaner (more
work than it sounds), whupped Georg at Go, and bought a cotton jacket /
  hoodie.

* Did not renew my licence (wrong year!), but signed up for the ISL
  http://acooke.org/cute/CurrentUnd0.html

* Read Genichiro Takahashi's "Sayonara, Gangesters"
  http://www.amazon.com/dp/1932234055
Pretty meh / dated. Think zany Vonnegut.

* Started Joanna Crow's "The Mapuche In Modern Chile"
  http://www.amazon.com/dp/0813044286

Chap 1 on the occupation too vague about basic military "facts"
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_Araucan%C3%ADa
unclear when, where or how reservations were created, or how land was
  removed via imposed law:
In 1866, the Chileans made a law that made Mapuche land public and
therefore, could be sold. In 1884, the Mapuche were put onto reservations,
and they lost even more land.
    http://www.mapuche.info/mapuint/Moylan990400.html (no idea if this
    source is reliable)
('reservation' and 'land' don't even appear in the index; "Laws" are
indexed, but none are in the first chapter).

This appears to have more information, more complex than the quote above -
http://www.mapuche.info/mapuint/calbu01.htm - and seems to be a spanish
translation of the first half of
  https://books.google.cl/books?id=Xdp-AgAAQBAJ&pg=PA67&lpg=PA67&dq=mapuche+1884+law&source=bl&ots=WI-TmVa5Ow&sig=zkqJ8xVj1rbSvw6MpUiddFncGm0&hl=en&sa=X&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=mapuche%201884%20law&f=false
which is the paper "Legal Process of Abolition of Collective Property - The
  Mapuche Case" by Jorge Calbucura
  http://www.peacepalacelibrary.nl/plinklet/index.php/index.php?ppn=315940298

In January 1883 the Chilean Army occupied the Araucania and Chile took
possession of approximately 55,800 square miles. The Government of Chile,
by decree, declared this territory proerty of the Republic. Based on
legal principles forumlated in 1813 the "Commission for the Relocation of
Indigenous Peoples" was created. The task of this commission was to place
the surviving Mapuche in reservations. The the course of thirty five
years (1884-1919) approximately 80,000 Mapuche were confined to some three
thousand reservations. During the same period approximately 22,000,000
acres of Mapuche land were given to Chilean and foreign settlers.

In the reservations we find small concentrations of families under a
hierarchical structure. The Cacique was give a Titulo de Merced wth the
task of distributing the property among its members. The Mapuche became
isolated in territory slightly above 1,235,000 acres, in a mountainous
zone and devoid of government assistance. The reservations became
enclaves of an agrarian subsistence economy.

* Did some sketching and painting (12 colour Koi box is really good!).
Motivated by Francis Ching's "Design Drawing".
  http://www.amazon.com/dp/0470533692
Using my left hand because it seems like it has more chance of lasting
(although I just realised I painted with my right! Duh!)

* Continued reading Nicole Krauss's "The History Of Love"
  http://www.amazon.com/dp/0393328627
