Boosting Volume (KDE, OpenSuse, ThinkPad)

Trying to listen to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHoJ9pQ0cn8 but the volume
is low (even at 100%). The pulseaudio volume control allows you to boost
levels over 100% (which presumably would distort if the level in the input was
100% too).

Install pavucontrol and run it from the command line.

If you get this error:

** (pavucontrol:21738): WARNING **: Error retrieving accessibility bus
   address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus
was not provided by any .service files
Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied
Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied
Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied

then check

  ls -l /run/user/1000

(the number may be different - it's your user ID) and, if you are not the
owner of the pulse directory, do:

  sudo chown andrew /run/user/1000/pulse/

(obviously, change "andrew" and "1000" as necessary).
